You must travel it by yourself

Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
It is not far. It is within reach.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere – on water and land.

-Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

I found these beautiful lines in Sukey Forbes’ heart-wrenching and life-affirming memoir, The Angel in My Pocket.

  1. In truly dark days about a year ago my mom’s voice came through the line, she sounded nervous but resolute, “Man, all I can tell you is that the only way is through. I don’t know how long it will take you, but there is a through, I promise.”

I clung to that idea, much like the quote above, and I made myself put one foot in front of the other until I made it.

    Beautiful.
