Mark Rothko & Mary Oliver

When it’s over, I want to say: all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.
When it is over, I don’t want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.
I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.
I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.
– When Death Comes

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
– Wild Geese

Do you love this world?
Do you cherish your humble and silky life?
Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
and softly,
and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,

with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
nothing, forever?
– Peonies

One of my favorite artists and one of my favorite poets. I love Mary Oliver. She has been a patron saint of this blog, actually, a thread running through my thoughts from the very beginning:

  1. Oh how I love Mary Oliver! And Mark Rothko. Have you ever heard of Dar Williams? She's a folk singer, and has a sweet song about Rothko.
    Happy Monday eve 🙂
